We're focused on building cross-generational talent across the bank and creating opportunities to spark creative thinking and innovation. By providing the tools, resources and support, we can create a culture where our colleagues feel inspired to develop and learn new skills. Career development is different for everyone and we want to be transparent with our career pathways, so that our colleagues can make informed decisions about the direction they wish to take. Our career journey framework is designed to provide colleagues with a clear view on where they are today and help them identify where they can build new experiences in the future – no matter their stage in life.

Our Great Leadership programme equips our people leaders with the skills to have great quality conversations around learning and development opportunities and to signpost access means for colleagues to explore what they are looking for in their career with us.

Our Action Plan

Apprenticeships
We’re always looking for talented people to join Virgin Money and over the years, we’ve had brilliant colleagues join us through our graduate and apprenticeship programmes. These programmes are available to a diverse range of people where it be you are just finishing education, are a working parent looking to try something new or if this is total re-career from military life.

STEM
Virgin Money's STEMtastic team held workshops with primary and secondary school pupils including a session from the brilliant team at Make £5 Grow, a quiz style workshop on understanding interest rates and inflation and a careers panel. Our STEM Ambassadors have reached more than 10,500 young people with a range of activities to inspire future generations.

Mentoring and Reverse mentoring
At Virgin Money, we want to inspire all colleagues to succeed. Mentoring can be a key tool in helping colleagues progress in current and future roles. Our mentoring programmes are open to all of our colleagues and provides a valuable investment for colleagues to leverage on the knowledge, skills and experience of their mentors. Our reverse mentoring flips traditional thinking and is incorporated to emphasise the experiences of our more junior colleagues. It offers the opportunity to promote greater intercultural awareness and interaction by gaining new insights from colleagues working at different levels.

The Armed Forces Covenant
We're committed in supporting veterans who have shown their courage and are proud to have been awarded the Armed Forces Covenant Gold status in 2019. We value the transferable skills veterans can bring into the workplace and we have created policies such as reservists service leave to ensure colleagues have flexibility around their training commitments.

Work readiness programmes
We're dedicated to providing career pathways for service personnel and work with Personnel Rehabilitation to deliver work readiness programmes for service personnel who are being medically discharged from the forces.

Aspire
Aspire connects our colleagues to mentoring opportunities, provides guidance on career moves and presents opportunities for colleagues to find their career path and encourages them to take it. Aspire promotes the principles of our BRAVER framework by providing a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for colleagues to navigating their career journeys. To do this they offer information, advice, development and networking opportunities.

Vets@Virgin
Our Vets@Vigin network group provides invaluable support and awareness to Armed Forces veterans as they return to civilian life. They also support the families of those who have served or are currently serving. By providing a platform of support, Vets@Virgin is able to support colleagues identify their career goals and to overcome any barriers to employment.

A Life More Virgin
At Virgin Money we want all colleagues to be inspired to succeed. To do that, we provide and evolve the tools available to colleagues to drive their careers. The flexibility offered by A Life More Virgin along with the team rhythms around learning means that we don’t mandate how our colleagues choose to develop but empower them to do it at their own pace. We encourage our colleagues take the time to look after their personal development and take ownership of what this looks and feels like. Through storytelling, providing role models and having a clear career journey framework, we are able to retain talent within the bank and ensure our colleagues have plenty of opportunity to grow.
